There will be one, and I will run it.
It will be for cosplayers with choreographed dances.
Like a cosplay contest, but only dances.
There'll be categories of group and individual, sub-categories of original and existing, and sub-sub categories of crossover and non. I think. If there are enough entries. If there aren't, it'll be simpler. Something like that. I have to think about it more, but I really want to run this. I tried something like this at K-con this year but didn't send the panel application in time. Tongue

Anyway, input?

Hopeful categories:

Individual - Existing
Individual - Original
Group - Existing
Group - Original
Interpretive-Improv
Popular Dances

What is "Existing" vs. "Original?"
Existing is something that already exists, like the Hare Hare Yukai, or Massara Blue Jeans dance.
Original is a dance you choreographed yourself or is completely original; a never been done before dance.

A little "Original" choreography will be allowed in "Existing" dances. It is more encouraged if you are doing a "Popular Dance," so it will spice things up a little bit. As long as it is recognizably "Existing" choreography for most of the dance.

For the "Interpretive/Improv" category, people can sign up here or at the convention and we'll put on a random song
(we'll try to make it one the entrant is familiar with) and they will make up a dance on the spot.

"Popular Dances" is the most iffy category out of them all. If we get enough entries of a certain dance, groups and individuals will be pitted against each other. Bwaahahaha. A little variety in the choreography is encouraged, like I said before. The most likely dances that will fall under this category are the Hare Hare Yukai and Motteke! Sailor Fuku dances.

cosplay dance choreographers exist!?

well, my two cents would be that i'd like to see two sub categories of this contest: improv and interpretive. because i want to see cosplayers dance around all silly like! i think anyone willing to get on stage and do interpretive dance should win something...

Interesting.  It will be fun to see how many people turn out for this.  I don't know of all that many otaku who are great dancers, but I would sure like to see some of them try!

Anyhoo, Venton, I think she means more like "Dancing with the Stars" or something like that dance contest.  I figure that there will be many different styles of dance, from classical to break dancing.   Is break dancing considered improv?  I think interpretive dancing is kinda a dying art, but I guess I could be wrong.  Tongue

honestly i just wanna see some one attempt the interpretive stuff, it doesnt matter how succesful or authentic they are, i'll laugh at them just the same.

odd point of thought - it would be really cool to have improve/interpretive character based dancing, kind of a mix of both dancing and posing!

If there's enough interest, we could have a whole separate category for improvised dance... I like that idea.

What exactly is improv dancing?   I'm a little foggy on the concept. Huh

Exactly what it sounds like?

Dancing without a preset routine; on the spot... improvised.

Hey, since this is a competition, we need to let people know about it so they can start readying their dances... Or, y'know, start coming up with them.

The contests need to be posted on the site instead of just having threads on the forum.
As soon as the details are finalized. (I'm still trying to figure out stuff for this, but this goes for the other contests as well.)

I'm not sure what equipment we'll have; I'll need to check in on that at the next staff meeting.

What kind of dance are you planning on doing? Cheesy I'm so happy that interest is shown again after so long.

BTW, dances can and are encouraged to be skit-like in nature. As in, tell a story (or at least kind of). It's still a 'cosplay' contest, so the costume should be relevant - it just won't be judged.
